Overview

This 5-day Maasai Mara safari takes you within the extraordinary wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle migration, and the savage predators that stalk it.

The Great Wildebeest Migration is the largest animal migration in the world. Every year, more than 2 million animals migrate in a clockwise direction across the ecosystems of the Serengeti (Tanzania) and the Maasai Mara (Kenya). We will take you into the middle of the action, predominately when the wildebeest cross the Mara River to get to more fertile grasslands. The crocodiles lay in wait beneath the surface as they are ambush predators. They swim slowly underwater to get close to their prey before they strike. This is a photographer’s paradise as the action, reaction, and death are part of the circle of life.

Itinerary

Day 1: Complimentary pick-up in the Nairobi area for an early morning drive to the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Stop At: Maasai Mara National Reserve, Narok 00100 Kenya
Be prepared to be astonished by the Mara Triangle’s vastness and the largest concentration of migratory game animals on the planet.
The “great wildebeest migration” is a big loop each year between the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It is impossible to predict the exact time of the migration as it is predicated on the ecosystem’s long and short rains. Regardless, you are guaranteed to see wildebeests wherever you go. An evening game drive in the Mara.
Duration: 1 day

Meals included:
• Dinner
Accommodation included: A 4-night stay at a Maasai-run safari lodge within the Mara Reserve, convenient and in the bush. Great food and Wi-Fi.

Day 2: Safari within the Mara and experience the remote, rugged wilderness of Serengeti’s ecosystem, which includes the Mara.

Stop At: Maasai Mara National Reserve, Narok 00100 Kenya
Because this is a very large reserve, there’s a lot of ground to cover on your game drive, including the banks of the Mara River and its ecosystem. Dead wildebeests float by, the ones that didn’t make it across the river, and the crocodiles are well fed. Your game drive can be early morning, afternoon, evening, or a combination of all three or stay out all day, your choice.
Duration: 1 day

Meals included:
• Breakfast
• Lunch
• Dinner
Accommodation included: Overnight accommodations at a safari lodge within the Reserve. It’s not uncommon to see wildebeests from your room.

Day 3: Follow predators as they stalk the wildebeest migration and explore the Mara’s hippo pools.

Stop At: Maasai Mara National Reserve, Narok 00100 Kenya
A game drive among the wildebeest for spectacular photo opportunities, and a visit to the Mara Elephant Project allows you to purchase some of their safari gear, which supports the conservation of the largest land mammal on the planet.

We will concentrate on the Mara River ecosystem that undulates through the Park like a snake slithering through the grass. The Mara River draws all life to her bosom, including the vast wildebeest herds. Crocodiles lie in wait beneath the river’s surface. They are ambush predators and wait until their prey is close at hand. This is a photographer’s paradise.
Duration: 1 day

Meals included:
• Breakfast
• Lunch
• Dinner
Accommodation included: Overnight within the Maasai Mara Reserve at the same safari lodge. Sit out by the campfire and soak in the night bush.

Day 4: Explore the Musiara Gate area, known for its lions within the Reserve. One of our favorite places!

Stop At: Maasai Mara National Reserve, Narok 00100 Kenya
A game drive in the Musiara area includes a stop at a Maasai village, Olare Orok, which is within the Reserve. The hand of tourism hasn’t touched them. This is the real deal. Walk around their village and visit with the Maasai or shop in their little stores for basics. They do sell Maasai shukas, the best price around.
You will see wildebeests wherever you go within the Reserve. Some prefer to stay next to the Mara River and don’t migrate south.
Duration: 1 day

Meals included:
• Breakfast
• Lunch
• Dinner
Accommodation included: Overnight at the same safari lodge within the Reserve. The bush comes alive at night, experience the essence.

Day 5: We’ll do a morning game drive before leaving for Nairobi.

Stop At: Maasai Mara National Reserve, Narok 00100 Kenya
A morning game drive in the Mara before leaving for Nairobi in the afternoon. The Maasai Mara contains the “Big 5”; large elephant herds, huge lion prides, leopards, cheetahs, rhinos, and Cape buffalos. The Mara ecosystem is also home to hundreds of exotic birds, including rare birds of prey.
