The Great Rift Valley View point is always a perfect place to make a stopover. Here you can watch the enthralling Rift valley with it’s vast vegetation and the sun rays kissing the far and wide stretching mountains in the surrounding. The Great Rift Valley is a wonder of the world stretching from the Middle East passing through Africa and has a great and vast chunk in East African part and ends in Mozambique in the South.
Stopping at the viewing point of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley to look, buy jewellery or just to take a breather is almost like a reflex action for many.
Duration: 20 minutes
Pass By: Mai Mahiu, Kenya
From Nairobi, Maai Mahiu town is the first town to meet on the floor of the Great Rift VAalley. It derived its name from kikuyu native language which means “hot water”. It is located at foot of the Rift Escarpment. It can be reach from Nairobi through the road that passes the Great Rift Valley escarpment.
The town is famous because of the Great Rift Valley escarpment that is found few kilometers away from the town.
Pass By: Mount Longonot National Park, Naivasha Road, Maai Mahiu 00200 Kenya
Rising from the floor of the Great Rift Valley like a monolith is the extinct volcano of Mount Longonot. A unique feature is the thick forest that lies within the crater of the mountain. The crater rim also provides great scenic views across the beautiful Rift Valley all the way to Lake Naivasha. Major wildlife attractions at Mount Longonot include buffaloes, elands, lion, leopard, bushbucks, common zebra, giraffe and Grant’s gazelles.
Stop At: Lake Nakuru National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park, Rift Valley Province
On the floor of the Great Rift Valley, surrounded by wooded and bushy grassland, lies the beautiful Lake Nakuru National Park. Visitors can enjoy the wide ecological diversity and varied habitats that range from Lake Nakuru itself to the surrounding escarpment and picturesque ridges. Lake Nakuru National Park is ideal for bird watching, hiking, picnic and game drives.
Lake Nakuru is among Kenya’s finest national parks. Flanked by rocky escarpments, pockets of acacia forest and at least one waterfall, the park is gorgeous year-round and is home to both black and white rhinos, lions, leopards, hippos and endangered Rothschild’s giraffes. Rising water levels in 2014 forced the park’s famous flamingos to flee (although a small number had returned at the time of research), and the lake is now hauntingly surrounded by drowned trees.
